This stunning work showcases Toro’s mastery of abstract expressionism, drawing inspiration from the emotive color fields of Mark Rothko and the gestural intensity of Gerhard Richter. Painted with a large palette knife and finished with a glossy sheen, this piece exudes a luxurious texture and depth, making it an irresistible addition for collectors seeking art that captures the magic of a sunset with bold sophistication.

The painting evokes the serene beauty of a California sunset, with a rich palette that transitions like the sky at dusk. At the top, fiery reds and oranges blaze across the canvas, mimicking the sun’s final glow as it dips below the horizon, their intensity softened by the large palette knife’s sweeping strokes. These warm hues gradually meld into deep purples and blues, creating a velvety gradient that mirrors the twilight sky over the Pacific. Vibrant greens and hints of yellow emerge in the lower sections, suggesting the lush landscapes of California kissed by the fading light, while subtle pinks and whites add a delicate softness, enhancing the painting’s dreamy atmosphere.

The glossy finish amplifies the artwork’s luminous quality, making the colors shimmer with a radiant, almost tactile intensity that feels as luxurious as velvet. Toro’s use of a large palette knife creates bold, textured layers, with each stroke capturing the spontaneity and emotion of a fleeting sunset. “Velvet (California Sunset)” is a visual symphony, blending warmth and tranquility in a way that feels both intimate and expansive.
